Rural Artists in Residence

Rural Artists in Residence present From Sticks to Stone

Rural Artists in Residence (RAIR) are a national organisation committed to furthering the profile of professional artists from rural areas. From Sticks to Stone is their first exhibition highlighting the work of contemporary artists from Dorset.

It is a timely parallel that we open the doors of our green and pleasant land the same week that Danny Boyle launches his vision for the nation. There is no doubt that the trend towards nostalgic or arcadian revolution has been growing with quiet momentum and this is our contribution to its proliferation…a welcome antidote to urban appetite.

Main room artists include: Ursula Leach, Chris Edwick, Rob Woolner, Phyllis Wolff, David Marl, Nicholas Hely Hutchinson and Richard Hoare. For more information and images of the art on show please visit http://rair.org.uk.

From Sticks to Stone is hosting evening viewings and drinks at The 54 Gallery from 18.30 onwards on 31st July, August 3rd & 9th. All are welcome. If you have never been to Shepherd Market before, you will find it a truly welcome persuasion away from the noise and chaos of the city streets. From Sticks to Stone at The 54 Gallery lies within a charming small square and piazza. It comprises a number of small side streets with a variety of boutique shops, restaurants and impressive Victorian pubs. This tiny little enclave is tucked away between Piccadilly and Curzon Street, in the exclusive borough of Mayfair. The neighbourhood’s quaintness removes one from the congestion and urgency of nearby Piccadilly and oftentimes leads one to forget they are in central London at all. Could there be a more perfect place for this rural themed exhibition to take place?

What a great idea - a taste of rural Dorset in London. They have created a really breathtaking display of original artworks, prints and ceramics for sale. The gallery is in a lovely location too that I had never been to before with gorgeous eateries and shops on every stretch and corner - which made it an all round great afternoon out. Go check it out!

This is a great collection of work which truly captures the essence of Dorset and rural England in general. Other exhibitions in this gallery tend to be only on for a week but there's plenty of time to see this one as it's on until 9th August. I went to an open evening and was given wine and a huge welcome - there are open evenings on 31st July, 3rd & 8th August from 7pm....

I was not sure what I was going to find, yet I ventured to this exhibition with high hopes coming from rural Dorset and being a great supporter of our very talented local artists. I was not disappointed! Not only was the exhibition fascinating and varied, showcasing a broad range of work, but it also felt very intimate. The welcome was wonderfully warm - all in all a great place to lose an afternoon in!
