One off performance with chamber ensemble and Candida Powell-Williams

About

Music Off Canvas is a group of classically trained musicians who work with individual artists to create unique and one-off collaborative performances. Their credits include the National Gallery in the Royal College of Music's Belle Shenkman Music Programme; headlining the RCM's ‘Great Exhibitionists' series; St Pancras Station; the Southbank Centre; and the Royal Albert Hall. Salisbury Arts Centre is delighted to welcome them to perform a specially created work in response to a new site specific installation by artist Candida Powell-Williams, which deals with humans' historical desire to fly. Playing on mythological narratives, real attempts, sleight of hand and mechanical shortfalls, the exhibition examines utopian dreams of becoming airborne and the urge to believe. The ensemble's work has previously responded to paintings by Dali and graffiti by Banksy, featuring a canvas painted through dance and a musical marble factory. Here, Hannah Grayson (flute), Vanessa Howells (oboe) and Sophie Crawford (bassoon), will navigate a precarious and theatrical sculptural environment where all adopt the persona of Christina the Astonishing, a ‘saint' who was seemingly raised from the dead in early 13th C Belgium. The mystical Christina, never formally canonised, always divided opinion; some thought she was mad or a con-woman, whilst others revered her as the messenger of the afterlife that she claimed to be, for miracles including levitation and passing unscathed through extreme feats of endurance. She remains a fascinating figure in the social history of women and is re-appropriated by the musicians and Powell-Williams as a feminist trickster. Book online or call 01722 321744
