Anna Morris

About

Anna Morris, an Oxford-based artist will present a new collection of contemporary work, which references everything from fresh green fields to rape-seed flowers contrasted with leaden skies, as well as collected fragments of eroded surfaces recorded through photographs and memory. Working from her Magdalen Road studio, Anna works in several stages; by scoring into wood, painting on clear acrylic, drawing and printing and by using thread, she combines a number of processes. The result is unique art-works that are part painting, and part sculpture, luminous and textured with continual changing levels of light reflecting, focusing or diffusing onto a painted or drawn mark. ‘The pieces in this exhibition aim to evoke memories and associations of the overlooked beauty I see in the everyday, such as the rhythm of sun-light through grasses, of evening light glancing off an old wall or the optical effect of light reflected on water. Much of the inspiration for this work comes from fleeting views seen when moving through a landscape,' she says. ‘Because the work is wall-mounted, yet partly sculptural, I am interested in the notion that the work will reveal something new when viewed from different angles. The viewer is drawn to the stillness of the image, but rewarded with a number of possible readings,' she explains. Anna Morris lives and works in Oxford, and as a member of the lively Magdalen Road studios, she successfully combines her teaching career at Cherwell School Art Department with her artistic practice; spending part of the week teaching and the rest of the time in her studio. Since completing her MA in Painting at Wimbledon College of Art in 2006 she has exhibited regularly both in the U.K and abroad, including London and Grenoble.
