Communal Trees:

The upcoming exhibition is a continuation of the project started in Poznan, Poland and in London, England in early 2011. Communal Trees/ Urban Nature project up to date comprised exhibitions, lectures, presentations of works in progress and workshops.

The project aimed at engaging its audience “to acquire knowledge and reflect, but also to act,” says curator and artist Joanna Tekla Wozniak, with artists and theorists taking part referring to the presence of wild vegetation in the city, as well as to various manifestations of nature and of what we perceive as natural.

The title of the project on the one hand refers to nature, in particular the existing vegetation within the modern metropolis - now in squares and parks - and forests located near metropolitan areas. On the other hand it can refer to the idea of collective v.s. individual. It can be also understood as a way of life for people in cities, a kind of instinct linked directly with the struggle for survival.
