The Queen, The Chairman and I - Kurt Tong
31. May - 23. Jun 12 / ended The Horse HospitalFree
12:00 - 18:00 (Mon - Sun)
The London Festival of Photography 2012 presents a new body of work by Kurt Tong retracing and bringing to life his ancestral roots.
Tong’s visual storybook explores questions of identity, nationality, self and country through a series of thought provoking images and texts that retrace and illuminate his unique ancestral history.
Tong was born in Hong Kong but spent two thirds of his life in England. Being raised between two cultures, he has constantly been faced with the question “How Chinese am I? Who am I?” Granting equal importance to new photographs, found photographs and writing, the work reconnects Tong with a Hong Kong of the past. Winner of the Luis Valtuena International Humanitarian Photography Award, Tong has worked for numerous NGOs and covered stories on topics ranging from female infanticide to ballroom dancers.

Photographically the show is incredibly strong and each image tells an important piece of the story as a whole. The space, which is slightly odd, is well used and practically disappears behind the tables of Chinese tea, games and books. Well worth a visit.
