Selected artists from the Swansea Print Workshop exhibit in Tenby

About

With a huge variety of life experience, training and interests, members of the Swansea Print Workshop have created an exciting mix of subject matter, colour, style and print methods for their first exhibition in Tenby. The seventeen artists, from all points of the compass, have over the years converged on Swansea and become members of the SPW. Here is dedicated workspace, relevant materials including huge presses and noxious chemicals, advice and direct teaching of techniques in long and short courses and a community of like-minded folk. Many of the exhibitors pursued art from the earliest opportunity and others followed careers in other professions and came to print-making later, inevitably being influenced by their previous occupations. Acting as tutors and directors in the group, as well as holding positions elsewhere, most have exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and several have work in public collections including at the Victoria and Albert Museum. David Barron set up the Foundation course at Swansea Art School and is an elected member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Michael Goode is currently Arts Development Officer at the Arts Council of Wales, and Bill Chambers is the Technical Demonstrator in Printmaking for the Art and Design Foundation Course at UWIC, Cardiff. The exhibition shows lino prints, mixes of print and stitching, cyanotypes, collagraphs, etchings, screenprints, drypoint and wood engravings. Subjects include landscape, still lifes, images of flora and fauna, townscapes, the human figure in contemporary, mythical and historical scenes and abstract work based on squares, grids, the seasons and architectural features. The selected artists, in addition to those already mentioned, are: Alan Figg, Arwen Roberts, Rose Davies, Lesley Lillywhite, Viv Mullett, Carys Roberts, Sheila Clark, Matthew Otten, Heidi Mehti, Robert Macdonald, Sally Hands, Jane Jones, Judith Stroud and Sally Price. .The exhibition at the White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby opens on 1st May and continues until 28th with an opportunity to meet some of the artists on Saturday 5th May from 2 to 4pm (everyone is invited). The gallery is open daily, except Wednesday, from 10am to 5pm. The entire exhibition can be viewed on the website: www.artmatters.org.uk. For further information telephone 01834 843375.
