Martin McGinn's paintings register immediately as landscapes and yet our senses can scarcely comprehend them. The shift in colour creates resistance in the viewer, making the pictures impossible to digest despite the immediately recognisable subject. The limited tonal range and shift in colour conjures an atmosphere of insistent back-and-forth in the viewer. Landscape, abstraction, landscape, decoration, landscape, concept. The landscape never settles in our eyes or mind, becoming instead a kind of perpetual motion machine for the senses.
