Recent Works by International Artist Eiko Matsuura

International Japanese artist Eiko Matsuura will be exhibiting at the Granary Art Gallery in June. She looks at the beauty of nature, examining trees and birds within landscapes. Eiko applies egg tempera to board or canvas when producing many of her paintings. This traditional and very durable medium which dates from the 1st century AD, consists of mixture of colour pigment and egg yolk. Once the paintings are dry, the resulting images have a delicate and highly detailed quality to them with a slight glaze.

Eiko studied at Kyoto Seika University in Japan where she studied under sculpture artist, Saburo Muraoka. He taught Eiko the importance of the meaning of the material used by the artist. This has led Eiko to a greater appreciation of egg tempera.

‘The colour, light and form are important elements in my work. I love the work of the Pre-raphaelites, especially how they use colour. I also love Barbara Hepworth's works in particular the way she creates the light and form.’

As well as exhibiting a selection portraits and landscapes, Eiko will also be showing a series of paintings from her ‘Blue Series’ which show a more abstract element of her work.

Eiko has exhibited worldwide, including Korea, America, England and Wales, as well as her home country Japan.

Eiko Matsuura will exhibit in the Granary Art Gallery throughout June.
