About

Canadian artist David Graham White studies how landscape is arranged and manipulated and yet how the impulses of nature forever desire to break free.

His photographs of predominantly Welsh gardens and landscapes from the series In the Garden I Felt Safe are produced with television monitors that he uses to replace the photographic enlarger. This process results in beautiful images that at the same time have an eerie feel to them, giving the sense that something else is lying underneath, something that cannot really be seen but that has left its traces in the photographs. White achieves this effect by taking images of park scenes and topiary in black and white. He then places the negative in front of a television screen and shoots another image of this picture with a digital camera. The colour in the final image results from the light source of the underlying television image.

White's photographs have a ghost-like, unsettling quality, with a suggestion that these beautiful 'gardenscapes' are not as innocent as they might seem and that something darker is lurking in the bushes or the foliage. The topiary gardens create wonder and worry, fantasy and fear, a utopia of disquiet pleasure.
