About

The title 'A Sudden Presence' is referring to both the idea of historical evocation and to the pleasure of getting a postcard from afar. Charles Nicholl's new book 'Traces Remain' has a sort of intrinsic relationship to postcards in the sharing of momentary glimpses of other worlds. In this collection Charles uses fragments of a person's life which he layers until they are thinking, breathing whole — a 'sudden presence' from the country of the past. Charles Nicholl is the author of nine books of history, biography and travel, including the epic and intimate Leonardo da Vinci: Flights of the Mind, the celebrated The Reckoning: The Murder of Christopher Marlowe (winner of the James Tait Black Prize for Biography, and the Crime Writers' Association ‘Gold Dagger' Award for non-fiction), Somebody Else: Arthur Rimbaud in Africa (winner of the Hawthornden Prize), The Fruit Palace and The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street.
