Vincent Delbrouck's work pushes the boundaries of documentary photography to incorporate his own narratives. Intimately tied to his personal experiences, Delbrouck's practice aims to capture his own state of mind and display the unity between mankind and nature. The resulting photographs bring us a new, almost imaginary, view of Havana, Nepal, India, and his native Belgium.

V.D. Is the inaugural exhibition of Third Floor Gallery's new Second Floor Extension. The show includes the projects ‘Beyond History’ (Havana 1998-2006), “As Dust Alights” and “Some Windy Trees”, which blend in the realism of Delbrouck's life in Cuba and the mystic experience in Nepal. We find in these series that photography is not only a tool for documenting journeys, but also a method that leads Delbrouck's search for identity. This practice reflects what is known in literature as autofiction. That is, the author steps beyond the expectations of documentary photography by combining realistic content with a dreamy, fictional narrative.

Vincent Delbrouck, also known as V.D., was born in Belgium in 1975. He has published three books, the most recent of which is “Beyond History” (Havana 1998-2006). Delbrouck was one of the Discoveries of the Meeting Place in Fotofest 2006 (Houston, USA) and has received the Memorial Giacomelli Award in 2002 and The Jean Salgaro Prize at the 14th National Open Photography Prize in Belgium. Delbrouck also collaborates with a large number of magazines and practices Shiatsu.

This exhibition is supported by Otley Brewing Company, and has been produced with help from the School of Film, Photography and Digital Media of Newport University.
