Lionel Friedland: Limited Edition Screenprints

The White Room Gallery first opened its doors in Bath seven years ago. In addition to exhibiting some of the world's most respected artists, thay have keenly promoted emerging talents, many of whom are now well-established names. Lionel Friedland is the latest artist to join the stable. Lionel Friedland studied Architecture at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, before embarking on a successful career as an Architect in South Africa and the U.K. Since 2000, Friedland has focussed increasingly on Fine Art and drawing; using similar techniques and materials to those he employed as an Architect, but freed from the parameters of a design brief, he uses his professionally-honed draftsmanship to create works about his interests, places he visits and people he meets. Friedland's pared-down, blueprint-like images start as complex, layered drawings which he breaks down by isolating important lines within the sketch. This simplified image is drawn on a large scale using the natural arcs of his arm to create accurate, smooth, sweeping lines. Finally, Friedland intuitively selects a colour before transferring the image to a screen for printing. The result is a striking work in a vibrant hue that instantly attracts the eye.
