Social Fabric symposium: speakers Sarat Maharaj, John Hutnyk & Janis Jefferies

About

Social Fabric symposium (10 March 2012) brings together a dynamic group of writers, curators and artists to question and debate the impact of trade in textiles on global social and economic processes. Presented by Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), it takes as its starting point Iniva's Social Fabric exhibition at Rivington Place which explores the textile industry, colonial history, international trade, labour and radical politics. Speakers Professor Sarat Maharaj, Professors Janis Jefferies and John Hutnyk, artists Sudhir Patwardhan and Alice Creischer, and curator Grant Watson will open up a series of debates around this topic. Subjects for discussion include how relationships founded on an imperialist past as well as a globalised present are reflected in the textiles trade and the subsequent movements of peoples, cultures and capital, as well as textile production as the site for social movements. Speakers will also examine the way artists, curators and critical thinkers are engaging with and re-inventing approaches to textile practice. Renowned speaker Sarat Maharaj has lectured and published throughout the world on visual cultures, cultural translation and difference, his writing covering topics such as Visual Art as Knowledge Production & Non-Knowledge; and Textiles, Cultural Translation and Difference. Also speaking at the symposium are Social Fabric exhibiting artists Alice Creischer and Sudhir Patwardhan. In Creischer's work textiles are used as a metaphor to describe the threads that connect and bind together global circuits of production and consumption, and Patwardhan examines the changing urban landscape of Mumbai, particularly the old industrial quarter which was once dominated by textile mills. Social Fabric symposium is presented by Iniva in partnership with the Royal College of Art and the Allianz Kulturstiftung; and is organised by Dr Christine Checinska.
