Recent Works by Jo McChesney
Something of the inspiration of Japan comes to the Granary Art Gallery in November when we welcome Jo McChesney for a selling exhibition of her recent works.
Born in Warwickshire, Jo's work involves print making using traditional techniques which are derived from traditonal Japanese woodblock techniques which are fused with a distinctly Western approach to image making.
After working as textile designer, illustrator and part time lecturer, Jo travelled to Kyoto, Japan to study the traditional technique of woodblock printing and gained firsthand experience in the medium. Focusing her works on the natural world, she is inspired by fleeting moments in time.
The images in her works range from the highly atmospheric weather changes in woodlands, with ethereal layers of detail looming through the mist, the contrasting illuminated trees in the early sun, to the movement of water in the rain.
Her work, using natural images, is printed upon handmade papers - a material with which she first experimented with when still a student at the Bath Academy of Art back in 1985 when she was specialising in illustration.
Fittingly as an artist who works in the medium of Japanese origin, who works using a British subject matter, Jo has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and also in Japan.
