About
Institution for the Future will showcase artists from various Asian countries who have actively engaged with their local arts scenes and who attempt to contribute in the development of an arts infrastructure in their regions. In light of the challenges faced by the commercial market and the global economic downturn the exhibition poses the question: What kind of institution do we need for the future? It seeks to explore this through archives and projects by artists and collectives who have been investigating potential new models for institutions and how art production might operate at a local level, whilst at the same time contributing to an international dialogue. The artists and collectives presented have invested in their local artistic communities in Asia, which over the last ten years have seen drastic change, and actively explore the role of art in society. Within this specific context and situation Institution for the Future will contribute to the international dialogue around what kind of institution is needed in Asia today.
This exhibition is part of the Asia Triennial Manchester 2011 and features artists from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. It serves as a platform to foster understanding of their work not only in UK and Europe, but also strengthen their dialogue across Asia.
Broadsheet, key publication in Australia and the Southeast Asian region on contemporary art and culture, is acting as a special partner for the exhibition Institution for the Future, by developing discussions on institutional change in the region through a series of texts.
The exhibition has been kindly supported by National Arts Council Singapore, Singapore International Foundation, Connection Through Culture.
