About

Artists:
David Bomberg with responses by :

Michael Ajerman, Simon Keenleyside, Sarah Lightman, Jane Millican, Gideon Rubin, Adriana Swierszczek, Polly Townsend.

This exhibition commemorates and celebrates the life and work of David Bomberg in a unique manner most appropriate to his own ethos of working with, challenging and inspiring the current generation of artists.

Fifty years after Bomberg's death a select group of contemporary artists have been invited to respond to a work by David Bomberg in the Ben Uri Gallery's permanent collection.

This new generation of artists will explore elements of Bomberg's legacy. Many questions are raised throughout their artistic process:

What still attracts artists to Bomberg's visual language?

Are there associations between contemporary artists who respond to Bomberg's practice?

To what extent can an artist communicate and engage with another artist's practice years after his death?

The gallery will be open from 12 ' 6pm on Sunday August 19, the 50th anniversary of Bomberg's death and will be hosting a Bomberg Open Day with guest speakers, discussions and refreshments. This day is designed for family, artists, critics and admirers of Bomberg.

Curated by Sarah Lightman with assistance from Beth Greenacre, Rokeby
