Haku-u, white marble, 2007

Hayashi Takeshi

Japanese stone sculptor, Hayashi Takeshi’s first ever UK solo exhibition Haku-u (white rain) is one of the highlights of the 2011 Edinburgh Art Festival. It includes two major pieces of Takeshi’s most recent work; Haku-u a serene ceremonial floor piece made of white Italian marble from Carrara, and Rinkan (Glade), a wall of black and steel grey, granite poles over 1.8 metres high, commissioned by the gallery.

Haku-u was inspired by heavy rain bouncing off the rice fields in Japan, it has been meticulously hand crafted and sanded to create a smooth surface, dotted with small peaks. This is the first time this work has been seen outside of Japan and Haku-u is Takeshi’s first solo show in the UK.
