Entrapement of the o/Other

'Entrapment of the o/Other' is a site-specific, video and sound installation by Kye Wilson that aims to give the viewer an emotive experience through a form of sensory engagement in an interesting and challenging historical space. This work is part of a body of work and touring programme in which a new moving image art work is devised and realised in a variety of different spaces, questioning the idea of the Other by allowing the context to be owned by the viewer and the place. The work includes a self choreographed live performance by artist Helena Eflerová inspired by Butoh, a Japanese physical language that visually conceptualises a dark experience, which is filmed in High Definition Video (HDV) format. The emotional tension is heightened by the expressive physical performance and the rigid confines of the long, static tableau camera shot of Eflerová directed by Wilson. The 'life-sized' video installation will be showcased as a simulacrum in the exact spot where the ‘performance to camera' took place — the central column inside The Round Tower, a fortification in Old Portsmouth built in the fifteenth century. Thematically the work explores the notions of absence and presence, the act of being, embodiment, power and gender, self and in particular Jacques Lacan's theories of the other, and the Other.
