A Brush with the East

About

The Barber Institute's beautiful 14th-century silk painting 'Mountainous Landscape', by Sheng Tzu-Chao, is the starting place and inspiration for contemporary painter Richard McGowan. This beautiful and tranquil picture is characterised by its graceful use of line and muted colour range, which skilfully evokes mood and provides it with a certain timeless quality. While superficiually very different to Sheng's treatment, McGowan's more abstract work emulates the former's muted colours and brings resonances of the Chinese master's landscaoe to his own canvases. McGowan's large paintings thus also evoke space and clarity, providing his own take on the themes of space and time.
