About

Gloss is very pleased to host a forthcoming, nationally acclaimed exhibition ‘Fish and Chicks' by photographer Lee Strickland from Saturday16th July until Saturday 3rd September, 2011. The exhibition will feature a selection of 80 x 60 light jet C-Type prints of Lee's atmospheric shots, which are both dramatic and cinematic in content. Each shot has been painstakingly set up and produced as if it were a feature film entitled ‘Fish and Chicks'. This style of photography is similar to the work of contemporary artist Cindy Sherman who features herself within visual narratives in the form of a ‘film still' and the audience have to decide the outcome. Lee says: " The inspiration for 'Fish and Chicks' originated from an article in a magazine about sustainable fishing and the fish shops that support it. I began looking at these shops, and what started out as 10 shots in 10 different fish and chip shops snowballed into a mixture of fish, chips and chicks, all with a dose of humour. I wanted 10 completely different scenario's, cinematic but most of all epic and ambitious in both size and idea. They were all shot with an understanding that they had to be viewed on a large scale. Most of the planning had to remain in my mind, as a computer screen did not do the concepts justice. As the ideas evolved , the chips became of less significance and gave way to the narrative that unfolded. From a random accident to the preposterous, each story contains the continuous threads of both the chips and the chicks, and all have a mysterious element to them. The viewer is left to make up their own mind about why, and what happened. " ‘Fish and Chicks' gained international attention during its debut in the Idea Generation Gallery in London last year (9th — 13th September, 2010). Lee has been 20 years experience of the business and has worked for GQ, Sunday Times, Financial Times How to Spend It, Arena, FHM Collections, Esquire, Marie Claire, with advertising clients spanning Absolute Vodka, Havana Club Rum, Pilsner Urquell, Coca Cola, Ray-Ban Aviator, Givenchy, Rochas, Burton, IBM. He has shot many celebrities including Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue, Fearne Cotton, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Kelly Brook, Charlotte Church, James Morrison, Vinnie Jones, Gary Kemp, Paul Bettany and John Malkovich.
