About

Marjolijn Dijkman's LUNà â€ž (2010), part of her Spike Island exhibition Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, pays tribute to the Lunar Society, a group of eighteenth century thinkers who met to discuss the topics of their age including exploration, collecting and the possibility of progress. She has reproduced the large oval table around which they held their meetings in a portable, flat pack form that the artist can transport with her around the world to stage similar conversations. The second of two such events at Spike Island is hosted by Richard Sheldon, Lecturer in Social and Economic History at the Department of History, University of Bristol. He chairs a discussion around radical protest movements and the Enlightenment, and is joined by artist Ruth Ewan and historian Malcolm Dick from University of Birmingham.
