About

Marjolijn Dijkman's LUNà â€ž (2010), part of her Spike Island exhibition Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, pays tribute to the Lunar Society, a group of eighteenth century thinkers who met to discuss the topics of their age including exploration, collecting and the possibility of progress. The artist has reproduced the large oval table around which they held their meetings in a portable, flat pack form that she can transport with her around the world to stage similar conversations. The first of two such events is hosted by members of Time Capsules and Conditions of Now, a trans-disciplinary art project bringing together artists and curators who each also operate within a second field, such as a yoga teacher, writer and a practicing GP. The project is influenced by theories of time, from quantum mechanics to meditation, as well as by social science, and research proceeds via unconventional methods that foreground direct experience and exploration, including journeying with a shaman, attending retreats and visiting museums dedicated to individuals such as the Freud Museum. At Spike Island the group invite the audience to participate in a series of playful engagements with time and presence, while exploring these phenomena through artistic, authorial and curatorial productions. The event coincides with the full moon, in homage to the original Lunar Society.
