Marsden Woo Gallery would like to present ‘Dark Water and Boulders Shouting', an exhibition of captivating new work by Gordon Baldwin. The eminent and highly influential ceramic artist explains: ‘this work is a continuation of my journey, with new pieces developing from old memories. I am surprised and pleased with the way this new work has turned out; the water probed deeply into my past'. A lifetime of experiences, influences and inspirations run through Baldwin's latest ceramics, and his profound thoughts are communicated in these new vessels and sculptures. Biographical notes Gordon Baldwin (b. 1932) initially trained as a painter at the Central School of Art and Design in the early 1950s, although his subsequent career as a ceramicist spans a period of almost 60 years. From 1958-1996 he was teacher of Ceramics and Sculpture at Eton College, and has been a major influence on many of the key figures in the contemporary ceramic world. He was awarded the OBE in 1992 in recognition of his influential career and achievements, and received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in 2000. His work is represented in numerous public collections worldwide, including that of The V&A, London, Crafts Council, London, Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Shigaraki, Japan, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, to name just a few. In February 2012 a major retrospective of Baldwin's work will open at the newly refurbished York Art Gallery. On show will be works that span his distinguished and prolific career, some of which have never been seen by the public.
