CORNERS? New Work by Tom Henderson
Contemporary minimalism often struggles to evolve given the compressed circumstances in which it finds itself. Ever decreasing restrictions and a persistent rejection of expressionism could force it into a corner from which it may perhaps fail to reappear. However a gentle acknowledgement of freedom or simple painterly brushwork can go a long way to highlighting the understated power inherent in reductive artwork.
The ?Corners? project is a continued exploration of three-dimensional space within the reduced environment of traditional wall-based painting. The frame is replaced with a structural element that protrudes through the picture plane as well as being the means by which the object is attached to the wall. Numerous asymmetrical planes and alternate borders are created through the use of spray painted Plexiglas, transparent resins, and raw brush strokes, allowing the viewer to explore multiple reactions of natural light and colour within each piece. The emphasis is set upon a symbiosis of ?wall-painting-frame? that readdresses conventional relationships and acknowledges the gesture of painting itself.
