About

G39's current If…. season of exhibitions concludes in March with an installation by Alistair Owen, transforming and manipulating the ground floor gallery space using new works with familiar utilities and objects. Alistair will be using the opportunity to expand on his recent explorations into liminality, particularly liminal spaces and temporary states of flux. Alistair uses deliberately utilitarian materials to create sculptural interventions to a variety of spaces, often using materials that contradict the purposes of the object, for example a seemingly cardboard vegetable box can later be found to be made from solid bronze, likewise a shelving unit can be found to be made from delicate cardboard. Continuality between object, space and person is what Alistair tries to understand, explain and explore in his practice. His work encourages questions about the perception of the presented space, material or objects that surround the viewer. Alistair typically uses a simple visual vocabulary to articulate his physical or hypothetical objects of choice. Often works resemble disused items at the periphery of our sight and conscience, cast away and forgotten, discarded and redundant. It is the relationships between such objects, their habited spaces and indeed us as viewers that Owen's installations seek to survey and explore.
