New Bloc Billboards

About

McCartneyVelardi are a collaboration of two artists who studied together at the Slade School of Fine Art. While Nicola McCartney and Jonathan Velardi maintain individual practices, they share a mutual interest in identity and stereotype within the context of popular culture through research and discussion. For the Bloc Billboards, the artists present two different works around themes of familiarity, seduction and the dream. Piggy-back is a digital collage of its namesake painting produced in 2010 and is an example of McCartney's interest in the fairytale. This playful image depicts the fantasy of its heroine subject whilst encouraging us to rethink the familiar and project our own imagination onto the characters depicted. Velardi presents a seductive mantra amongst the commercial speech of economic markets and forecasts that are broadcast daily across the urban landscape. Bigger Better encourages the aspiration that thrived during the first decade of the twenty-first century. The work will occupy Billboards on Eyre Lane, S1 4RB and Sylvester St, S1 4RN Between March and June 2011.
