About

Blackall Studios are delighted to announce the second UK solo exhibition of new work by the Bulgarian-born artist Silvia Anguelova, The Eternal Feminine. Anguelova's work links the social, cultural and religious codes of our contemporary society with the hidden feminine aspect of the male-dominated religions. Her photographs construct the paradigmatic model of the Eternal Feminine which combines the myth of mother, virgin, homeland, nature, etc. The woman is presented as the fundamental prototype, the Mother-Matrix — the origin and ultimate end of life, as the eternity of space, as the tree of life, as man's missing opposite pole. Anguelova's images give a physical dimension to the woman's tedious daily routines depicting vividly the relationship between love and hatred, pain and sex, life and death. In her new exhibition, Silvia Anguelova's dramatic centerpieces are two Tableaux Vivants (Living Pictures) set in two levels: superior in purifying white, and inferior in lusty black. The artist's conceptual space decision is to create a finite image of Infinity illustrating the inner need of the body to be sensed. The mise-en-scene is presented to the public with the setting of those Living Pictures. Anguelova introduces her vision and then allows the audience to explore how the photographic shoot might evolve. The photographic prints establish the distance needed for reflection and analysis. The Living Pictures abolish this distance, whereby our prejudices are destroyed and our sensitivity is awakened. We realise that until then our sensitivity has been under the anaesthetic power of the sterile stimuli of modern life and has opposed the virtual reality of our time. This iconic art form enables the young photographer to explore simultaneously both the theatrical and the pictorial, to capture the sensation between performance and silence, the shared moment between vivid presence and history. Theatralisation and exasperation of the classical and the mythological, juxtaposition of artworks, periods, fears, taboos, beauty and expectation… the works of Silvia Anguelova create a sophisticated equilibrium of wonder, beauty and disbelief. Anguelova graduated from University of Paris 8 in 2006 with a degree in Photography & Multimedia. Her photographs are included in International Edition of Nude Art Today (I & II). Recent exhibitions include Collection: «Tableaux Vivants, Mise en Scene & Photography», Showcase The Old Truman Brewery, London, «Les Grands Maitres de Demain», Carrousel du Louvre, Paris, «Provok», Cultural Center Christiane Peugeot, Paris, «La Photographie Alternative», Renoma Project Design, Paris, «Doussement Nous Sommes Presses», Heart Gallery, Paris, International Photography Festival, Pingyao (China).
