About

This spring, the Millennium Gallery will play host to an exhibition of new work by international contemporary artist Katerina Seda. A new large scale commission for Museums Sheffield, Lisen Profile, has been developed through the inaugural Contemporary Art Society Annual Award, presented to Museums Sheffield in November 2009. Funded by the Sfumato Foundation, the Award has been established to support museums in commissioning new work that once completed, will remain within the museum's permanent collection.

Based in the Czech Republic, Katerina Seda produces work exploring themes of history and community and ideas around individual and collective identity. In this new commission for Museums Sheffield, Seda will investigate the unspoken characteristics that link a person to the village, town, city or country they call home. Examining the connection between anthropological and geographical form, she has worked with residents of her hometown of Lisen and over 500 people across the Czech Republic to try and capture those physical qualities which best reflect the Lisen Profile.

Katerina Seda has shown work at several major exhibitions internationally, including Documenta XII, Manifesta 7, the Lyon and Berlin biennials and the University of Chicago. Her reputation in the United Kingdom continues to grow following shows at Frieze Art Fair and Wysing Art Centre. Seda also took part in Art Sheffield 2010 ' Life: A User's Manual, which saw her work go on show at the Millennium Gallery. The Contemporary Art Society Award will see Seda's new commission for Museums Sheffield join the city's visual art collection.

Established to mark the Contemporary Art Society's centenary, the Annual Award offers £60,000 to support a new commission that will animate and become a permanent work within a public museums collection. The Annual Award is intended to support the work of an artist who is at a stage in their career where they are showing regularly nationally and internationally but may not yet have major works acquired in to public collections.
