About

‘It is the attention that still life painting brings to the ‘silent forms', which share our domestic lives.' ‘Silent forms' is a quote from Ode On A Grecian Urn by John Keats. In her new exhibition, Simmonds depicts classic still life subjects; from fruit or flowers found in local markets, ceramics scoured from antique or bric — a — brac shops to objects that carry more lasting memories for the artist. She is drawn to an object by its shape, colour, the way the light plays on its surface; ‘an unspecified quality which catches or delights' her interest. The artist's studio is a 19th century old school building, in a small market town on the edge of the North Wiltshire Downs. In the tradition of still life painting, Simmonds paints all her subjects from life, using only natural light. She prefers natural light as it ‘brings more life' to her experience of painting as she tries to capture the variations of a still life set up, the shifting light creates.
