ART STARS Mentor JASPER JOFFE at the Royal College of Art: DIY as Artistic Practice, not Aesthetic

About

Acclaimed contemporary artist and ART STARS mentor Jasper Joffe will host a discussion to share his experiences of working in today's art world as a practitioner, teacher and arts activist. Known for advocating the arts as a way to communicate and reach people, Joffe will discuss how he has employed this position in his own practice and development. The talk, which is open to the public, will also focus on strategies relating to artists' career growth such as thinking about brand commissions, opportunities that are available outside gallery representation, and the craft of casting the net wider. Earlier this year, Joffe participated in a project developed by Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren that commissioned nearly 50 of Europe's most exciting contemporary artists to customize 3-dimensional stars made from the finest American denim. Each artist created a unique work while responding to the iconography of Americana: beyond the shapes and sizes of the ART STARS, the only limit was their imaginations... This talk is supported by the ART STARS 2011 campaign and open-call competition that is geared towards career development and education. By offering opportunities to artists and designers, ART STARS 2011 is launching a competition that awards a commission-based project, mentorship programme and seminar series.
