About

This ambitious exhibition curated by Oriel Davis Gallery, Wales, focuses on contemporary artists and makers whose work in some way makes reference to pattern traditions (largely textile), whilst often engaging and challenging perceived boundaries between contemporary visual art and craft. Beyond Pattern brings together eleven artists from the UK who are investigating the potential of pattern as a social, cultural and political commentator that reaches beyond the purposes of ornamentation and decoration. The show aims to investigate the usefulness of pattern and its consumerism, explore historical and contemporary ideologies, contrast the public and the private space and examine the activity and role of labour. The exhibition includes new and existing work by Catherin Bertola and Angharad Pearce-Jones, Michael Brennand-Wood, Nisha Duggal, Doug Jones, Pamela So, Henna Nadeem and Andrea Stokes. Documentation of an offsite commission by artist Steve Messam also accompanies the exhibition. Adam King and Leo Fitzmaurice will create new work specifically for the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery. There are two talks to coincide with this exhibition, see our art gallery events page page for more details.
