About

The Green lens Studios is pleased to announce ‘Future Island' on November 11-13th 2010. This exhibition features an inspiring installation by American born artist Andrew Ranville. Future Island is a semi-fixed installation that will be exhibited on the 11th (private viewing) and 12th of November in the Green Lens Studios, before it is installed in the New River canal near the studio. Andrew Ranville incorporates installation, photography, film and sculpture into his practice. In Future Island, his latest work, he focuses on sculpture. The piece exhibited consists of a small sapling, which grows directly into water. Biodegradable air pillows enable the structure to float as the plant takes root in a streambed, where it has been placed. Over the course of a 10-15 year period, the sculpture will grow into an island. Ranville's installation provides an exceptional glimpse into the issues of environmental sustainability. The installation depicts the artist's journey to seek out and explore this issue. Future Island reflects the gallery's own ethos of actively engaging in and promoting environmental sustainability, while still reflecting the individual artist's views on the issues concerned. Ranville's piece is made of biodegradable parts and could contribute to the healthy filtration of the water as it grows. Ranville's work is also exhibited at a "Screening Night" on November 12th. This consists of a few short films, which play alongside the installation piece in this exhibition. Artist statement: ‘Using sculpture, installation, photography and film my work attempts to describe a personal form of psychgeographic study- the relation of ones own body to the space they inhabit, interact with, and navigate. When a viewer encounters my work, I hope to trigger the recognition of a new path or vantage point, a potential moment, or the viewers' acknowledgement of something as simple as their feet touching the ground. I endeavor to accomplish this while using ecologically sensitive methods which communicate sustainability.' # # # VISITOR INFORMATION: November 11th : Private viewing 6pm-9pm. November 12th : Holds a "Screening Night" of a few of Ranville's films from 7pm-8.30pm. November 13th : Installing of Future Island in the New River canal 2-3.30pm.
