About

As part of the Big Draw and the nationwide Campaign for Drawing during October, Jerwood Space is running two events to engage visitors with the act of drawing. Running in conjunction with the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2010 exhibition, everyone coming to the Gallery, Café and Glasshouse will be able to participate in drawing activities with artists from the exhibition. Artist talks and Workshop: Friday 22 October 2010, 2.30pm — 4.30pm Artists Mark Farhall, Donna Huddleston and George Young will be giving a talk about their practices at the beginning of the event. Following this they will invite visitors to join them in a hands-on workshop, exploring the material processes behind their work. Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Big Draw: Saturday 23 October, drop-in 12.30pm — 2.30pm Artists Warren Andrews, Perienne Christian and James Eden will be on hand to provide inspiration and guidance to visitors. The event will be accompanied by live music from Emma Grylls and Cameron Murdoch. This event will be suitable for all ages and abilities and will also be of interest to artists and students with a particular interest in drawing. The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the country's leading award in drawing, and is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition dedicated to drawing in the UK. Established in 1996 as the annual Cheltenham Open Drawing Exhibition it was renamed the Jerwood Drawing Prize when the Jerwood Charitable Foundation became the principal supporter in 2001. Virginia Verran has been named First Prize Winner and awarded £6,000 for her drawing Bolus-Space (signal) in the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2010. Her work, along with that of the 70 short-listed artists will be shown at Jerwood Space, London SE1 from 29 September — 7 November 2010, and will then tour. A Second Prize of £3,000 was awarded to Cadi Froehlich who is currently studying for a Fine Art Foundation Degree at Brighton University City College. Cadi's work, Untitled (tea table), comprises of a side table with marks left by hot drinks. Just under 3,000 entries were submitted this year for consideration by the distinguished panel of selectors: Charles Darwent, Art Critic, Independent on Sunday; Jenni Lomax, Director of the Camden Arts Centre; and Emma Talbot, artist. The shortlist includes established artists as well as relative newcomers and students fresh from art school.
