Stranger’s Stories
7 October to 16 October 2010
Private view: Thursday 7 October, 2010, 6-8pm
Exhibiting photographers: Andrea Allan and Alex McIlhiney

The Viewfinder Photography Gallery presents “Stranger’s Stories”, an exhibition of photographic works by Andrea Allan and Alex McIlhiney, combining photography with narrative texts to tell the stories of the world and people around them. Andrea Allan and Alex McIlhiney broaden the limits of photography and writing to explore the human experience.

Viewfinder curator Kathleen Brey says, "The photographs featured in ‘Stranger’s Stories’ exhibition trigger emotions that all of us share. The exhibition is about observing people and creating our own stories regarding the lives of others. Photography, like the written word, has the poetic power to weave complex and often mysterious narratives. By layering images with words, Andrea Allan and Alex McIlhiney push the limits of visual documentation.”

Workshop:
Up-close and Personal
Saturday 9 October, 2-5pm, meet at Gypsy Moth pub in Greenwich, free
One of the biggest challenges photographers experience is photographing strangers. Often photographers yearn to create portraits of people around them but struggle with their approach to potential subjects. This workshop is for those who want to put their fears of photographing strangers to rest. Join a friendly group of your peers as we address photographing strangers, and get amazing portraits in the process.
This workshop will be led by Viewfinder curator, Kathleen Brey, who cut her teeth on street photography. Meet at the Gypsy Moth pub in Greenwich at 2pm for a discussion, go off to photograph, then reconvene for a friendly critique. Cameras are available to borrow if you do not have your own. Book early as spaces will fill fast, email gallery@viewfinder.org.uk.
This workshop is free, funded by Grassroots Grants and the Capital Community Foundation.
Workshop:
Photography and Text: In session with the artist
Saturday 16 October, 1-4pm, at Viewfinder Photography Gallery in Brixton Village, free

This workshop is an introduction to photography and text; why you would use them together, what you can achieve by this, and how to understand the interrelationship between the two. Participants will learn how to read photographs in terms of the connotations added through creating narratives. Participants will be given photographs as examples to think about what sort of text they would put with it and why. Participants will discuss how you can construct a narrative, and come up with a brief outline of a story. Then participants will go out and photograph, taking photographs they think goes with the storyline. The group will reconvene and start to build a narrative with the photographs, adding text to accompany the work.

Please bring along a photograph that you wish to write about, or some writing that you wish to express through photography. Cameras are available to borrow if you do not have your own. Book early as spaces will fill fast, email gallery@viewfinder.org.uk.

This workshop is free, funded by Grassroots Grants and the Capital Community Foundation.
