An experimental new direction from established ceramicist Sara Radstone

About

Inspiration for these new works comes from her recent experimentation with ambitious new display methods, with individual elements variously suspended from rusted wire or free-standing. By using weathered wire to suspend her fragile work Radstone creates literal and symbolic contrasts. This can be seen in the surface appearance of the materials, and in the way in which the heavy-duty wire, whilst enabling the work to be seen, also traps it within cage-like structures. The fragility of her work is further intensified in the precarious poise of the paper-thin free-standing pieces.

Bright primary colours are used within the interior surfaces of the forms, but crucially can only be discovered upon close inspection. Whereas Radstone's previous work hid the interior from the viewer, now this inner space breaks open to reveal an emotional intensity formerly denied to us. Through such changes in emphasis Radstone offers fresh perspectives on her enduring preoccupations.

Biographical notes:
Sara Radstone studied at Herefordshire College of Art and Design and Camberwell School of Art and Crafts. She has exhibited widely, with solo and group shows across Europe and the USA. Her work is included in numerous private collections and public collections such as the V&A and Crafts Council, London, Aberdeen Museum and Art Gallery and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her work has featured in various publications, the latest of which being David Whiting's 'Modern British Potters and their Studios', published by A&C Black in 2010.
