Barak Marshall - The Politics of Dance

About

Drawing on his own choreographic practice Barak will consider wider political issues: The loss of unique choreographic vocabularies: Is this due to the dependence on the dancer as a generator of movement? Is the democratic or dictorial approach more beneficial in creating choreographic languages? Whether Israeli politics is expressed in Israeli dance The role of art in bridging cultures. The son of acclaimed dancer, choreographer and musician Margalit Oved, Barak Marshall was born and raised in Los Angeles and immigrated to Israel in 1994. He established his place in the dance world in 1995, and has since won numerous awards including Prix d'Auteur Award, Bonnie Bird Award for New Choreography and National ADAMI Award. Marshall has created several works for international dance companies including the Batsheva Ensemble and MDT Dance Company. He has appeared in the prestigious RomaEuropa and Arci Milano festivals to rave reviews and his work Emma Goldman's Wedding, created for the 1997 Curtain-Up Festival, was invited to perform throughout Europe as part of Israel's 50th anniversary. In addition to his work in dance, Marshall is a singer of Middle Eastern and Rock music performing with acclaimed composers, musicians and orchestras. In 2007, he became artistic director of the Tel Aviv/Los Angeles Partnership.
