Caroline Jones - Colour and Light: Recent Paintings

About

Enthusiastic in her studies, Caroline gained her Fine Art / History of Art degree at Swansea, and later took a BA combined honours course - The Artist in Modern Society / Modern English. By 1994 she was in Cape Town taking her MA in Medieval Studies but by 2001 had returned to Wales and undertaken her PhD at Lampeter University. In 2003, now more properly addressed as Dr Caroline Jones, she opened The Loft Gallery in Carmarthen, showing her own paintings as well as those of selected artists from the area. The next four years' activity included her: chairing the Carmarthenshire Open Studios; contributing to exhibitions at Aberglasney, Oriel Myrddn, Cardiff City Hall, Llandeilo's Newton House, and at the Welsh Assembly; having her paintings selected for many events' publicity; judging exhibitions at Llanelli and in Carmarthen; and meeting Prince Charles and being commended for her art and business enterprise, under the aegis of Prime-Cymru of which HRH is the founder. Since her final show at the Loft, a joint exhibition with all the artists she had gathered around her, Caroline has taken on even more enterprises - including managing a holiday cottages business and training as a TESOL teacher at Aberystwyth University. This last has taken her to several locations across the UK in the past few years, on contracts for teaching English as a second language to students from overseas. Currently she is in Southhampton, returning home at weekends, to paint. Caroline works in a large studio housed in an outbuilding on the smallholding she shares with her husband, and an assortment of creatures from bees to bullocks. She is inspired by all things Welsh, especially the landscapes around her and enjoys painting people too, found in the rural community of farms and markets. Holidays abroad provide her with the challenge of representing a different light and heat to that found in west Wales, and populated beach, town and night scenes provide a contrast to the landscapes of high rocky outcrops of Garn Fawr and Strumble, the beaches of Druidston, Langland and Wiseman's Bridge, and seascapes of three counties. Brilliant sometimes improbable colour, bold compositions, moods that range from fiesta time to calm contemplation, these are not subtle representations of local landscapes but, based on strong artistic foundations, joyous personal responses in paint to the artist's surroundings. The exhibition of Caroline Jones will show from 1st to 28th October at Art Matters at The White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby which is opposite the Town Walls and next door to the cinema. It is open from 10am to 5pm every day except for Wednesdays. This exhibition, and the work of 50 other artists, may be viewed on the website: www.artmatters.org.uk and further information obtained by telephone: 01834-843375
