Sergey Magnitsky's Case and Russian Law by Jamison Firestone

About

PUSHKIN CLUB PROGRAMME Language: In English Sergei Magnitsky (8 April 1972 — 16 November 2009) was a Russian attorney who accused police of aiding thefts from the Russian budget totaling hundreds of millions of pounds. Shortly after making his accusations he was arrested without trial by the same officers he had accused. His death in police custody just days before the one year limit that he could be held without trial generated international media attention and launched an investigation into allegations of massive corruption and abuse. Prior to his arrest Magnitsky was employed by Firestone Duncan, a law firm active in Russia since 1991. Its founding partner Jamison Firestone, an American lawyer originally from New York, is today based in London. Firestone fled Russia over fears he was being targeted after he publicly accused the police officers of murder and theft. Since his arrival in the UK he and other friends of Magnitsky have launched a series of youtube exposés showing that the officers acquired and hid millions at the time of the thefts that Magnitsky reported. Firestone has also launched a series of legal attacks on the officers in Russia. Firestone will be talking about Magnitsky's case and the new realities of the Russian legal system.
