ASTROLABE

About

Winner of the aspex Emergency2 award in 2005, Tim Machin presents a series of new works in this solo exhibition Astrolabe. The title of the show is taken from an early device used to measure the heavens. Through his intricate drawings and tiny sculptures, Machin quietly unpicks his surroundings and explores the methods we use to describe, name and categorise the world. Minute in scale, this quirky and original work is as surprising in its point of origin as its point of discovery. Jumbo rubbers are transformed into pink houses, a roll of parcel tape becomes a cloud, while a wall planner becomes a painting. Through the use of everyday materials these low-fi, humorous interventions re-imagine the grand laws that shape the world.
