About

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ESCALATOR VISUAL ARTS Wysing Arts Centre invites applications to participate in a research trip to the opening of Manifesta 8. As part of the Escalator talent development plan for the East of England, Wysing Arts Centre are inviting artists and curators from the East Region to apply to take part in a research trip to the Region of Murcia for the opening of Manifesta 8. Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, is a roving, contemporary art event, showcasing the most innovative work by artists and curators from Europe and beyond. For Manifesta 8, rather than focusing on the European East-West divide, Murcia and Cartagena were selected as hosts for its dialogue with northern Africa. The south of Spain includes a blend of Islamic, Judaic and Christian cultural influences and both cities display intertwining cultures and a diverse cultural heritage. Successful applicants will arrive in Spain on the 6th October and attend the preview and opening of the Biennial over the next three days, flying back on the 10th. Accommodation, flights and a modest daily per diem will be provided. Eight artists/curators will be selected from applications to attend the opening accompanied by members of Wysing Arts Centre's team. Dates 6th — 10th October. Arriving in Murcia on Wednesday 6th for the preview and opening of the Biennial, flying back on the 10th. The deadline for applications is Monday 13th September 2010, 5pm. How to Apply The research trip is open to applications from curators and artists working in any media living in the East of England. There is no form to fill in to apply, instead we ask you to answer the following question in your application and also to provide us with the information listed below. We are very happy to receive MP3/4 files or CDs/DVDs instead of written applications. Please answer the question: How will this research trip to Manifesta 8 help your practice? (max 400 words) A statement on your practice (max 400 words) A current CV including contact details (Address, email, phone number) A selection of 6 images or other material that represents your practice (cds, DVDs, etc) When responding to the question we are looking for artists who display a critical interest or understanding of the following issues informing Manifesta 8: Issues of time and place in relation to contemporary art and exhibition making. The relationship between local and international, specifically international concerns about migration, refugee status and trans-nationalism. Please send applications to escalator@wysingartscentre.org or Wysing Arts Centre, Fox Road, Bourn, Cambridgeshire, CB23 2TX Selection Procedure Following submission, retreat participants will be selected by Wysing's Curatorial Team.
