Graduates: A love of making unites this international group of graduates from the MA Designer Maker pathway. There is a strong tradition of crafts at Camberwell; an environment that encourages inter-disciplinary freedom and curiosity for materials and processes. Works explore themes of dreamscapes, echoes of organic forms, investigations of thoughtful living and the language of everyday objects. Come and see new ideas and individual approaches at the 2010 MADM summer show. Context: This year presents a diverse range of work including ceramics, sculptures, furniture, lighting and installations. The works explore the meanings and aesthetics of man-made or natural objects touching on themes such as collecting, sustainability, patterns in nature and explorations into the ethereal. The pathway focuses on the issues surrounding the making/materials as well as the study of man-made objects. Materiality, tacit knowledge, knowledge in practice, practice as research, craft and design history and practice, interdisciplinary practice, sustainability and more. The pathway programme encourages the students to locate and view their practice and objects they create within and in relation to wider social and cultural spheres, and to extend their practice beyond the craft and design arena (e.g. material culture studies, anthropology, philosophy, sustainability, consumerism, museum studies, psychology, literature etc.) The students are encouraged to ‘think with their hands' and to observe and reflect on their practice in order to develop a skill with which the maker's ideas are successfully communicated in multiple media (objects/texts/visuals). As a whole, the works reflect the course's strong focus on making, processes and materials as a channel that leads to critical investigations into human conditions as well as the socio-cultural agenda in contemporary society.
