About

supercollider is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Samantha Donnelly 'Chaste Glances Signify Missed Chances'. The exhibition showcases a new installation punctuated by individual sculptures and wall-based collages. The work takes two sources as catalyst: Guy Bourdin's photography, specifically one of his 'Beauty Photographs' (1969) that features in 'Unseen Vogue: The Secret History of Fashion Photography', (2002); and Victor Burgin's 'Office at Night' series, from the 1980's. Both Bourdin and Burgin's works invoke a liminal space between expectation and reality, illuminating some of the structures used in the creation of desire and readership. Donnelly has sought to replicate this through playing with the compositional differences between wall-based collages and floor based sculptures. The individual works in the exhibition form dialogues with each other, recalling the complex inter-relations of the original Bourdin and Burgin footage. The result is a space where object/space and place/subject are called into question as much as the construction of desire is; the construction of the ideal, to replace the real. These oscillations of slippage and tension reflect Bourdin and Burgin's work, and respond to the interconnected rhizomatic structure of society we live within today.
