From the Mexican indigenous word meaning butterfly, the papalote or kite is an icon of Mexican culture that goes back centuries. To coincide with the 2010 double celebration of the Centenary of the Mexican Revolution and the Bicentenary of Mexican independence – this installation in the eighteenth-century stairwell is a vibrant display of ‘papalotes’ by Francisco Toledo, one of the most important artists working in Mexico today. Each art kite is an exquisite work of art, rich with the themes and symbolism of Toledo such as snakes and turtles and human figures from Mexican history.
