About

In June 2010, the gallery will be showing Rosie Sanders' new work, including large-scale watercolours of flowers in various transitional stages. Fresh closed buds, open flowers in their prime and fragile petals on the verge of death coincide in this exhibition, creating an emotionally charged and electric series of works. ‘Flowers are like truth in nature. They look so peaceful, but they are fighting for position, they can be alarming and threatening. There is tension among them. This is why I don't paint pretty flowers — I like the drama, I like something in their threatening nature.' (Rosie Sanders 2009) Sanders explores the movement and transitional stages that take place when a bud flourishes into a flower. The result is a series of powerful paintings that exude energy and are full of emotional charge. In Sanders ‘Tulip paintings', including Red Parrot Tulips, she captures the flowers ‘opening up' at different stages as they flower, right up until the point they are about to die. This is in fact her favourite moment; 'I love the way the stems move in a sinuous way.'
