The Strickland Distribution and Ultra-red

About

Who: Strickland Distribution (www.strickdistro.org), which inc. writer Neil Gray, editor of Variant (www.variant.org.uk) Leigh French and artist and programmer Simon Yuill, who may all be asking us: what does critical urban praxis look like? International sound art collective Ultra-red (www.ultrared.org / www.publicrec.org), key ponderers on the use of listening. What: An annotated walk highlighting the threats implicit in the gentrification of Glasgow's East End. Involving: walking (obviously) and talking on our way to the Barras, where we'll stop for a film screening, maybe some other presentations and (importantly) refreshments. Why: Local writers, artists, activists and academics will use the walk to highlight Glasgow's dubious drive for gentrification and raise fears about the consequences and threats this drive holds. Ultra-red make sound recordings of sites of struggle and contest, so that they can be used and analysed later in an activist/ artistic process; so they'll record the walk and sites (or maybe ask you to record them with them) we visit, as the starting point for collective discussions the following Sunday (more below). Where: From George Square to the Barras When: Meet at 13:00. Walk might take until 16:00. Screenings, talks, chatting etc until 19:00 Tickets: Free, just turn-up Notes: It's an outdoor walk, which might take 2 — 3 hours, then a chance to catch up and chat somewhere near the Barras. So dress accordingly, something warm.
