FutureEverything 2010 Art Programme

About

Continuing FutureEverything's pioneering approach to the digital world and contemporary art, this year's art programme features art and design projects across the city, from urban interventions by leading figures in visual culture to inspirational approaches to visualising data. Main exhibition Serendipity City sees artists sparking the urban imagination, with architecture-inspired work and a curated selection of city-drifting iPhone and Android apps, while jaw-dropping data visualisations bring open data concepts to life and a selection of FutureEverything 2010 Award nominees are also on display. Cu, is an exhibition on the theme of medium and mediation, with a related Art&Media conversation event exploring the (dis)connections between media art and visual art. The Feast of Trimalchio, a lavish update on mythical tales by Russian artists AES+F will be installed in the plush foyer of the Palace Hotel, while cutting edge collective Agents of Change take over a huge secret space, streamed live into festival venues and revealed on the final day. Across the city, the European Architectural Students Association (EASA) build a new temporary structure in public space, making physical the themes of The City Experiment, and a showcase project from the Manchester Modernist Society sees the five remaining red telephone kiosks in the city centre reconnected to their environment. A screening programme offers further mediations on the built environment including a witty photo essay from Jacques Peretti and a 16mm print of Gordon Matta Clark's breathtaking Conical Intersect. Exchange and conversation are key to a series of projects, including Eastman Cheng's hometown object swap, Hafsah Naib's digital book residency in Contemporary Art Iraq and TOTeM's project in Oxfam connecting stories to objects via RFID and QR tags. And a partnership with the UK's first Fab Lab opens up the possibilities for 3-D printing and laser etching in a series of artist residencies for the Rapid Prototyping Art Challenge.
