Gasworks presents the first UK exhibition by Colombian artist Mateo Lopez . His exhibition will be the result of three months of research and studio practice in London, as part of Gasworks International Residency Programme. Lopez will present new and existing work in an installation conceived in response to Gasworks' exhibition space.
Mateo Lopez makes drawings and installations to describe personal journeys and creates studio-like situations in which the production and display of the work overlap. His works are informed by notes and photographs that he takes constantly. In many of his installations, Lopez combines real objects with drawings which he expands into three-dimensional forms, unfolding a narrative constructed by processes of associations rather than a linear trajectory.
As part of the research for his exhibition at Gasworks, the artist will visit museums and libraries, investigating the function and evolution of drawing as an educational tool. His interest lies more specifically in how disciplines such as mathematics, architecture and botany have, across the centuries, resorted to drawing and created parallel visual languages to rationalise and categorise the world. Mateo Lopez will use his findings and personal experiences during the residency to develop a visual diary which will be articulated in the installation at Gasworks.
