About

Jonathan Cooper Park Walk Gallery is pleased to announce ‘Closer to Home', a new exhibition of sixteen paintings by Guernsey based wildlife artist Harriet Bane. This is the artist's first solo exhibition in London since 2003. Inspiration for the exhibition comes from the large variety of birds found on the island of Guernsey; native, migrant and the ‘occasional exotic visitor blown off course.' Such an abundance of wildlife, and the gentle rural landscape of Guernsey and its miles of seashorehave encouraged the artist to work ‘closer to home' and explore her local surroundings. Bane's work is influenced by the artwork of the 19th century recorders of Natural History; ‘their extraordinary detailing and slip of perspective, the inclusion of a hint of landscape and a section of plant or tree to create a scene.' In particular, the work of John James Audubon and his ‘beautiful birds with their watchful eyes and the exquisite balance of bird and branch in Japanese prints.'
