Talk | Sergey Prokofiev as a Writer by Anthony Phillips

About

PUSHKIN CLUB PROGRAMME Language: In English The music of Prokofiev is among the most frequently performed, loved, and lodged in the pathways of the brain, of any composed in the 20th century. Less familiar are this extraordinarily creative and independently-minded man's literary interests, skills and ambitions. It is particularly timely to remember them since the last two months have seen rare productions of two of his operas, War and Peace, based on Tolstoy's novel, in Glasgow, and at the Royal Opera House here in London The Gambler based Dostoveysky's novella, both with librettos fashioned by the composer. Both were singularly unappreciated and unsuccessful in his lifetime, as were with the possible exception of The Love For Three Oranges all the operas into which, undaunted, he poured much of the cream of his composing genius. The talk will try to shed some light on Prokofiev's lifelong fascination with the craft of writing linked alike to his music and independently of it.
