About

This exhibition celebrates the career of David Hillman as one of Britain's most important editorial designers. Hillman describes himself as a 'jobbing designer' which hardly does justice to a distinguished career that spans editorial design for newspapers and magazines, logotypes, product design, corporate identities and stamp design to name just a few areas of his design practice. A British editorial design icon, Hillman art directed Nova magazine through its most successful period at the end of the sixties and, in the early eighties, having become a partner at Pentagram, he executed the re-design of the Guardian newspaper that established its position at the forefront of UK publishing design. Hillman recently left Pentagram to establish his own design company Studio David Hillman. Filled with work created for a variety of clients, this exhibition will engage with key moments from David Hillman's career and consider how these projects have influenced the shape and trajectory of editorial design today. The exhibition will also expose the concept of editorial design and art direction and discuss the processes involved in these often overlooked areas of design.
